    1969 Three Speed Manual Transmission

A couple of production documents that I've seen posted recently have me thinking about when the three speed manual was phased out of 1969 production.

Total three speed production would seem to be 252 units (taking all of the RPO transmission totals and subtracting it from the total number of Corvettes built in 1969 - not a perfect solution, but its what we have). A certain production record seems to indicate that 252 three speed manual cars were built by the end of September 1969. That means no three speed manual cars for at least the last three months of production.

We know that Chevrolet changed the main case and side cover for the four speed transmission in September/October 1969. We know that Cheverolet standardized the M-20 four speed manual transmission for the 1970 model year. Is it possible that they made the change to standardize the four speed at the normal model year break (September 1969).

What is the latest three speed manual transmission 1969 that we know of? Anybody have a verified VIN after car number 31000 or so? Is there any documentation out there that would indicate that the three speed was either available or discontinued at some point in late 1969?

    Regards,

    Stan Falenski

GM production records indicate 182 3 spd. 300 HP Corvettes were produced through August '69. This averages 15.2 per month. If 70 more were produced it seems unlikely they were all produced in one month. A four month average of 17.5 through December '69 appears more likely.

Bringing this one back from the dead…. I have records showing that all 252 three speed manual transmission cars were built by the end of September 1969. David’s post indicating 182 built by the end of August 1969 and a four month build out of 70 transmissions is more likely than a one month build out that his numbers infer.

The question remains…. Does anybody have a documented three speed manual transmission car that was built October 1969 - December 1969?

            Thanks for the feedback!
