I'm afraid that I have shot myself in the foot! (again). I was changing my directional switch when I encountered a very stuck upper brg in the upper brg housing. It was really stuck and wouldn't move by hand. In my frustration, I put several screw drivers between the upper flange & signal switch cover and proceeded to wiggle the bearing up? It was a little dark, the bearing wasn't moving but the shaft assembly was moving into the outer tube assy by more than a half inch! I didn't really get heavy handed with it but it moved in without too much force? So I'm wondering how much trouble I'm in? In the archives someone noted that the distance from shaft end to the mask jacket is 7 1/16 & I am quite a bit smaller than this. Can I just use a puller to get back to where it should be? BTW I have installed a Borgnson steering box & moved the lower shaft in about 2" and probably probably broke the plastic pin. Any help greatly appreciated!

Re: 67 Late Steering Mask Jacket Help
John I have to run out but take a look at these 2 print pages which show dimensions. It might help.

You'll have to zoom in to get better clarity.
One other thing.... I'm thinking you might be able to push the shaft back down a bit as there are 2 shafts, inner and outer and you may have extended it a bit. It's a collapsible design.

Re: 67 Late Steering Mask Jacket Help
Thanks for the info and links to the drawings. I have printed the drawings and with the help of an eye loop can read them! It looks like the distance from the flange to top brg mount plate is about .55 and the switch cub is about .05 thk so if I could pull the flange out ~ 1/2" it might work if I didn't damage the the collapsible birdcage too much?Attached Files- Top

Re: 67 Late Steering Mask Jacket Help
John,
I'm trying to understand exactly what you're issue is, but just reread your initial post again. A few notes...
You said the upper bearing was "stuck in the housing".
It is designed that way. It is not easily removable. The bearing is held in after installation as the rim of the housing was pressed over the bearing outer race to keep it from rotating.
Pointer below is at the housing rim which holds the bearing.
PC240030.jpg
Usually what happens is the pressed housing rim loosens up over time and the bearing outer race becomes loose. It can be tightened by using a pointed drift to stake the outer rim edges down after a "repress" of the rim using a sized socket. e.g. ......
Socket in a hydraulic press to repress the rim down a bit.

Then stake the rim in several places...

The above was mainly to show that what you saw on yours was normal. The bearing is solidly mounted in the housing.
I'm still a bit uncertain where your problem is, if the upper shaft moved up or if the housing moved. I'm unfamiliar with the Borgnson conversion and a bit confused about the 2" shaft adjustment.

PS To read those prints it may be clearer to load the pdf in the Adobe reader and zoom in.- Top

Re: 67 Late Steering Mask Jacket Help
I finally got the upper brg off of the shaft ... someone had really greased it and it was stuck with dried grease. Dried grease heavy in balls also.
So the problem now is the outer housing being pushed in and the distance between shaft end and outer flange being too large for the outer brg hsg to seat. I tried to show this in my last picture and the distance is ~1/2". Most likely the mesh is compressed and hopefully will return if I try to pull outer tube back out. My car still has the thin cover over the mesh and worried if I disturb it it will crumble!- Top
