Proper screws for C3 4-speed shifter boot

What is the proper screw type that holds the 1970 4-speed shifter boot to the console plate?

The screws on my car have Phillips countersink heads. But the holes in the plate are not countersunk so the screw heads protrude quite a bit when installed; see photos.

This doesn't look right, so I'm wondering if these are the wrong screws.

Your screws are "almost correct". The original screws were exactly as you have pictured except they had a very slightly rounded head. Yours appear completely flat. However, I have little doubt that they are original to the car. They're probably an assembly line substitution.

By the way, the bezel holes are countersunk. They're just not countersunk enough for full engagement of the tapered section of the screw. That's how they were originally and time has not changed that.

Agree with Joe. Fig. I7.10 in current manual shows an oval head, cross-recess screw. See those most often.

        Gary,

That figure in the JG is dark and small, but it looks like the head of a countersunk or oval-head screw sticking out from a hole that's not countersunk (or as Joe suggests, not countersunk to match the fastener).

Did Chevy use screws better suited for this application, maybe in subsequent years? Perhaps this is original, but it's in front of me while driving and looks wrong. I'd like to find a countersunk screw with a smaller head to fit more flush, or maybe a truss or pan head screw with the same threads and length.

          Mark,
I think these would be more apropos. Smoother, rounder head.

Thanks Leif. For $3 I'll try them. How they look depends on the size of the head... if significantly smaller these may be a winner.

My 70 has oval head, cross-recess screws. I've never had these out since I've owned the car.
              My 68 use pan-head cross-recess head screws.

First, I was mistaken about the screw holes on the shifter boot bezel being countersunk. They were not countersunk, at all.

Second, the screws used for 1968 were GM #9422245. These are a pan head phillips tapping screw just as you have pictured for your 1968.

Third, the screws used for the 1969-73 shifter boot bezel were GM #9420610. These are the phillips, round head, tapered base (countersunk) tapping screws. For 1974 it was back to the pan head, phillips screws, GM #9419327, for this application.

Fourth, the screws used to fasten the console plate to the forward console for 1969-73 were GM #3843505. These were a flat head, tapered("countersunk"), phillips tapping screw. In Mark's case, these may have been used for the shifter bezel either as a factory mistake or someone could have mis-installed the screws on re-installation of the console plate. However, if the latter occurred, I would expect the round head screws would have been used to attach the console plate to the forward console. The console plate screw holes were countersunk and these screws install flush with the console plate.

ALL of the above screws were black phosphate finished.

To Joe's point...AMK Products sells the #9420610 screws. They appear to be like the ones available from Zip.

Thank you Joe. I've made updates to the 68-69 and the 70-72 TIM&JG's. Also added better pictures.
