C3 Steering Wheel Removal really Required to Remove Column

Hi everyone,

I know both the service manual and Jim Shea's paper says to remove the steering wheel when removing a '69 tilt/tele column but is it truly required? Appears from a clearance perspective it does not need to be removed. And I'm not planning on doing any service on the column just need it out of the way. Perhaps the fear is the wheel would be used to support the column once it's removed or some such.

No, it is not necessary.

Maybe not entirely necessary, but if getting it out of the way means removing it from the car, I would remove the wheel. Interior of a Corvette gets real tight when you start maneuvering that column around with the wheel in place. Would be easier if the seat is out, but I would rather remove the wheel than the seat. One more tip. Columns painted are easily scratched and difficult to touch up. After removing your wheel, remove your turn signal lever and tilt lever if so equipped. Then use an old pillowcase or a towel to wrap the column before removing. Chip.

Just remove it and get it out of the way. It's super easy to remove... a few screws.

Thanks everyone. I'll go ahead and remove it. Anything to make it easier and less likely to scratch is worth it.
