    C2 (1967) Accelerator pedal spacer

I'm replacing the carpet in my 1967. When I removed the old carpet (replacement by previous owner) the small wood block (GM part number 3863736) was missing.

I do not want to spend $10+ to order a $7 parts, so I'm inclined to make my own. Does anyone have the dimensions for this part? I can guestimate the length and width, but it's hard to guess the thickness from pictures. I'm thinking it is 1/4" to 3/16" thick, but I am not sure.

I did find one thread that said the reproductions are thicker than the original, but not much else.

    Thanks,
    Don

Re: C2 (1967) Accelerator pedal spacer

    Don,
When I replaced my carpet I did not have a spacer - I ordered one from (not sure, could have been LIC or ?????). Anyway - when I positioned it and then "tried" to run the two screws in with the gas pedal in position it was impossible to catch the threads - the repro spacer is too thick. Impossible to use. I made a spacer out of 3/8 inch ply wood. That worked - as I recall, someone on this Forum posted a drawing or the dimensions of an OEM spacer - I am pretty sure that is where I got my dimension from. FYI - the shape of the repro spacer is correct, length, width, cut outs etc - it is the thickness that is incorrect.

Don - here is a thread that has a post that includes the dimensions of an OEM spacer - post by Alan Drake: FYI - this "spacer" is not a very precise gizmo - goes under the carpet - no one can see it - you can figure out the general shape of one from pics on the internet or a vendor catalog. The thickness is the critical dimension - if you go with 3/8ths you should be ok.

Thanks much for finding this Ed.

The dimension in the link are what I was looking for.

Don't bother looking for an NOS example. GM #3863736 was a PRODUCTION-only part and never available in SERVICE.

Joe - what function or purpose did the spacer serve? Was it intended to affect the functioning of the accelerator pedal or, somehow preserve the carpet / reduce wear in that area? When I removed my old carpet I didn't have one - the absence of it did not appear to have an effect on the functioning of the accelerator pedal. I installed one when I replaced the carpet - still no obvious difference with it in place. Seems like a totally unnecessary part to me.

I took the reproduction spacer and very carefully cut it in half. Works fine.

I don't really know what the precise function of the spacer was. However, the fact that it was never available in SERVICE strongly implies that GM did not consider it an essential part.

I took the specs from the link in Ed's post #3. Took me all of 10-15 minutes.

                  Thanks to all,

IMO The spacer keeps the carpet level under the accelerator when the accelerator is screwed in place. The spacer will be about the same thickness as the jute. It allows the accel to be tight to the floor without carpet distortion. The jute in this area should be cut out.

I just replaced the driver's side carpet in my '67 and the spacer was there, I had never seen one before. It looked like the one in the picture Don posted, but in much worse condition.
