    Re: Axle ratio question

G95 was not a unique "part" - it was a code for "highway axle ratio" - could be one of two different ratios, depending on whether the car had an automatic or 4 speed trans.

      Re: Axle ratio question

      As stated by Ed Szeliga:
If your car is an automatic the G95 "highway" axle ratio should be 2.73:1. If you have a 4 speed a highway axle ratio was 3.08:1. Highway axle ratios were only available with the base engine. Highway ratios were not paired with the optional L82 engine.

And why the 75-77 revision team went to great lengths to tease out what axle ration went with what transmission/engine combination.

What is source of your dealer invoice?

Is GM original source, or is this a reproduction copy?

Can't find "G95" in my Parts Book RPO Code list.

What does a RPO code mean.

                  Re: Axle ratio question

RPOs are regular production option and use to specify the various options to build a vehicle. It represents both standard equipment and buyer options. So for example, your L48 and M20 are standard options RPOs, while the G95 is a buyer option that you pay extra for (well, sometimes).

In your G95 example, the RPO means that the G95 code calls out an axle option depending on the engine/transmission configuration. That's where you confusion lies and as others point out, means an additional reference document is needed to decipher precisely the G95 axle ratio for an L48 M20

                  Hope this helps.

It's not listed on your dealer invoice...so if you have the rear spring...than it was a previous owner-inspired addition. FE7 would include a rear stabilizer bar...that is usually a solid indication...since shocks have usually been replaced. Remember...FE7 is another option

                        Re: Axle ratio question

Assuming the correct speedometer gears are installed for the installed axle and the installed tires revs/mile are the same as OE:

                        Axle ratio = revs @ 60 / 760.

The above will not give you the exact ratio to three digits, but round to the nearest available axle ratio, and assume up to 50 RPM for converter slippage if an automatic.
