Regarding DOT 5 compatibility, there are some recent, informative postings on the Corvette Forum that Jim Lockwood made me aware of, including this one:

      Gary,

That is great information. When it warms up a little, I am going to take my original 67 Master cylinder apart and see how bad the bore is. It may be that the seals I was using o it are still good, as this car has very few road miles on it, hence, little wear on the seals. They were fine with the DOT 5 I was using, so why would then no t be fine with it again!

Bill- There may be another problem regarding silicon fluid and the reproduction master cylinders. I bought a GM reproduction licensed master cylinder from Muskegon Brakes and put an NOS Delco Moraine rebuild kit in it to assure compatibility with silicone fluid. I could not bench bleed it. I think the problem is that the small holes from the reservoir to the bore are more restrictive than on original master cylinders and did not work well with the higher viscosity of silicone brake fluid. The these small holes on original master cylinders are counter sunk to create a funnel shaped entry to the hole which reduces the length of the small diameter passage. The reproduction master cylinders lack the counter sinks which creates a longer small hole which the fluid must pass through from the reservoir to the bore. I think this caused a problem with my silicone fluid. The Muskegon Brake people were nice to deal with and they agreed to take back my reproduction master cylinder and sleeve an original master cylinder I had. The sleeved original master cylinder worked fine with the same silicone fluid.

I think both the reproduction master cylinder and the sleeving of the original cylinder came from Lone Star with Muskegon as a dealer. I did not like the unnecessary gray coating that was done to the reservoir of the sleeved cylinder but it did not interfere with the operation with silicone fluid. I think the small holes in reproduction master cylinder could be counter sunk to fix this problem if one were stuck with a reproduction cylinder that could not be returned, but sleeving an original cylinder was a cleaner solution since the Muskegon guys were treating me very kindly.
