There is no inconsistency if you read my entire post. I said that the calipers were coated/painted. Then, I said that the original calipers on my 1969 were not painted. Then, I said .....I believe that was not typical for the vast majority of 1965-82 Corvettes

As far as why they were painted/coated I said ...probably for rust prevention. Note the word PROBABLY.

Do I consider my car "special" because the calipers were not coated/painted? Not at all but considering that the vast majority were coated/painted, mine is rather unusual and if there was one, there could well be and probably are others. Actually, when I discovered this about 45 years ago I felt kind of deprived. I corrected that after the calipers were sleeved and my calipers have been painted black for the last 45 years.

If you doubt that the calipers were originally painted, all you need do is look carefully at the assembly line photo in the original post here. That's "typical of factory production".

As far as your statement "...if GM worried about rust prevention, then why are the differential and other cast items NOT painted?' Well, one could say, if the frame is coated/painted why wasn't the differential coated/painted? Or, if the trailing arms were painted why wasn't the differential painted? Or, if the a-arms were painted why wasn't the differential painted? Or, if the engine was painted why wasn't the differential painted? Or, if the differential support crossmember was painted why wasn't the differential painted? And, on-and-on.

By the way, the master cylinder on my car was originally painted.

You are correct. Some castings were dip painted at the foundry and some not. Not sure if the call to paint or not was GM'S or the machine shop. Paint was not for rust on the car but no rust when machines & sent to the assembly line. Wouldn't call it real paint just a water based coating.

Joe- I ordered 69 # 30751 in Feb. 69- Still have the car and the original calipers, and they were not painted either.

          Brian,

I would suggest you contact someone such as Ken at Lonestar Caliper and direct this question at him. He has seen thousands of calipers and would give you some answers. It will not be based on "My calipers are original" but based on real life experience seeing thousands of calipers each year for the past several years. Then you can report back and maybe even write an article for The Restorer Magazine.

FYI - September 1965 Corvette assembly line images, from sequential vehicles.
Difficult to enlarge (with good quality), but the calipers appear to be painted.

Patrick, can I get you to show us a picture of the exterior side of the caliper(s), specifically the half-moon shaped machined areas? Thanks in advance.
