    rear storage frame

    So digging into the rear storage compartment...wanting to salvage all I can. One or more of the individual frames is toast/cracked as is the overall frame so those will all need replaced. I would like to try to salvage the fiberboard doors in large part because the jack one has original stickers. i would recarpet and reframe them. My question is about the hinges which I would also prefer to salvage but discovered they appear to be riveted to the frame. So is my only option to drill them out and attempt to re-rivet to the new frame? As usual I have been through the AIM and Paragon info and do not see a clear alternative option. As I type this I guess one alternative would be to buy a whole new assembly and swap out the doors for my old ones recarpeted?

      I put together a little resto article on this very thing. It was published in this Summer 2022 RESTORER. You can also find it in our Pittsburgh Chapter Newsletter RPM
      Summer 2019. Just go to our website under Membership and scroll down thru the newsletters.
      Thanks Jimmy. I did see the hardware kits...but had only looked on Paragon and that one does not include the rivets...but I now see the Zip one does include the rivets. Easy peasy. Part of my goal with the restoration is to keep anything that is on it that is functional, correct, and not looking like crap. The compartment assembly fails that last criteria. In addition to wanting to salvage the fiberboards though they will need some TLC I want to keep the hinges in part because they are black and a quick look for replacements I only saw stainless. Thanks also for all the other intel including the Irwin shop. One impact of spending time on the restoration is I am behind on my RESTORER reading as I do read every one cover to cover!

        Al Knoch has just the frame:



        Or you can buy the entire assembly from them and exchange whatever original parts you would like to.

        Be sure to keep your original screws because a lot of the reproductions being sold are incorrect.

          Yep...Knoch is the go to for most things interior. I already got the individual door bezels thinking at the time I did not need more. I will indeed keep the screws though many of them are toast with either stripped heads, rust, or both. If just rust evaporust will take care of that. Fiberboard will need repair in a few screw slot areas...thinking wood glue, clamp, done. I am learning. Sometimes I end buying parts that I later discover i can restore what I have. Other times I buy a component of an assembly only later to discover would have been better off b buying the whole assembly in cases where available. Such is the journey....My only knock on Knoch (sorry could not resist) is I wish they provided product descriptions so as to know differences from construction of original (ie. seat backs) or the fact screw holes not pre-drilled.

            I just recently installed an Al Knoch entire assembly. I did have to drill two holes on each end to attach it to the car, and I had to drill the hole for the courtesy light. I also had to take the doors off to paint it frame to get the hinges painted. The screws on the side of the trim were domed not flat. I also replaced the screws holding the doors to the frame. One more thing, the pull handle on the jack door was on the wrong side of the push button. You couldn't tell on the carpet side that there was a hole, and one of the labels covered the hole on the back side. I found three excellent labels on ebay.

              A good example of my point. One would think buying the complete assembly of something would be simpler than that. Further, I am a fan of Knoch but can't for the life of me understand why they do not pre-drill screw holes. I raised that point with them about my ebrake cover...and they sent me a new one with holes started in the relevant locations.

                I just wanted to say that I too am a big fan of Al Knoch. They were recently excellent at working with me to get my 70 convertible carpet as close to NCRS specifications as possible.

                    No one makes a replacement carpet with a correct IMCo logo in the heal pad. The 70 convertible carpet in the rear is different than other years which they accommodated me with. The original carpet they sent had the front carpet with rows running front to back with a dimmer switch pad. The front carpet should have the rows running side-to-side, and 70's had no dimmer switch pad. They sent me the correct replacement. I am very satisfied with what I ended up with and will be ordering more parts from Al Knoch.

                      Nobody makes carpet sets that are completely correct in configuration.
                      Material, shape, bindings and orientation are often not the same as what was factory installed.
