    Corvette Storage on Lift

Now that winter is knocking on the front door the time comes to put away the toys. I'm considering storing a C4 or a C6 (both convertibles) on a two post lift. Does anyone have any experience with this? Years ago a friend stored a GTO this way and found the front end sagged. I believe the newer Corvette frame is much more rigid but I thought it wise to ask. Thanks

I would never store a car with suspension hanging free, whether on a lift or on blocks.

Agree with Pat. For storing my '65 and '71 I would never use any two-post lift. I have a Four Post Extra Tall Back Yard Buddy. Couldn't be happier with it.

Mark call me tomorrow and we can rearrange the garage so everything will fit on the floor. Hope this helps Jeff.

Thanks to all for the input. For those who are curious Jeff is my neighbor and right hand man. He is also finishing up on a 67 coupe restoration.

Mark my professional recomendation being in the lift business for over 40 years is that you never want to store a vehicle on a two post lift for any length of time. You do not want the suspension to hang free .

ALL cars are made to set on their wheels. I never let anyone open the door of a convertible that is on a 2 post lift.

There's a damned good reason why service and assembly documentation says to tighten suspension bushings with the car at normal ride height.

Storing a car with suspension hanging free puts undue stress on your suspensions rubber bushings from "hanging" parts.

Potential for bushing to shear internally as suspension was initially tightened at ride height.

Same song, different verse with tightening up a suspension (during restoration) at other than ride height. Sometimes you'll spot a car that's sitting way too high - suspension tightened up when it was not at ride height. Now car's own weight is putting undue stress on those rubber bushings.

Bushings are integral part of your suspension - once internally sheared (failed) ride quality suffers, etc.

I'm hearing don't use a lift letting the suspension hang freely. What about when on the ground using jack stands to remove some of the weight mass but not totally off the ground? Is there benefit in doing that?

There is only one 2-post lift on the market that has the ability to safely and properly store a vehicle. It’s made Mohawk and is considered commercial grade. I have a 4-post which is great and a pair of rolling jack that go it’s it to lift a vehicle by the under frame when necessary. I need a second lift so I bought the Mohawk. It uses tire adapters that allow you to lift a vehicle for repair or storage. It’s pricey, but worth it in the long run for the dual purpose use.

You guys been doing this lift storage for years. Is there any fatigue issues with the arms in the up position for seasons at a time? Are they beefed up?

To me that sounds best of both worlds and I see no downside. Relieves "some" load on shocks, struts, springs while keeping generally intended design orientation of bushings etc and avoiding/minimizing tire flat spots. For the time being I just use flatstoppers, battery tender and wait for spring.
