    69 Wiper Door Link Shim/Seal

Can anyone provide the type of material and dimensions of the item described in the AIM as a seal (shown below)? But called a shim in one vendor's catalog and a gasket in others. It goes between the firewall and the reinforcement for the wiper door link. In the AIM it appears to have square corners, but elsewhere is shown with rounded corners. I'm hoping I can fabricate replacements rather than ordering them (requires three).

    Thanks,
    Mike

Mike, I think the word seal is more descriptive of their function. Chevrolet has some strange terms for parts of the car. I am sure they made sense to the engineers, even if not us.

I don't know how you will get dimensions because the material they used softens and deforms with engine compartment heat. Someone may have the original prints. That is the only way dimensions will be available due to the previously mentioned deformation. Based on the original cars i have seen the original size was quite variable. They may have been cut by hand without regard to exact dimensions.

I have seen restorations made using the same material that is used on air conditioning systems to attach the pilot absolute temperature sensor to the coolant line. This material is available from HVAC supply companies.

Just cut a piece a little larger than the reinforcement and heat it with a heat gun. After it deforms on the edges from the heat call it good.

        Mike,
This morning I checked my Oct. 68 car and there is no seal at any of the mounting locations. The assembly has never been out of the car. The AIM indicates that this item, #21, was added at some time but no date is shown. Apparently early cars did not have this part. The sheet I have in my AIM was drawn 5-10 and I am thinking that was 5-1-69 and applies to late cars. What is the date of your car?

Jeff, My 69 AIM has the same note and same dwg date. The production date of my car was 9/6, so I assume it was a recipient of the seals...for what they were worth. About as thick as the cardboard back of a legal pad and didn't cover the opening completely. No surprise.
          Thanks for your input.

These seals were once available in SERVICE but were discontinued without supersession in April, 1975.
