Watch the news for the story of Jay Leno and his injuries from a fire at his shop. Not many details yet but fairly serious I think. Point is BE CAREFUL when working on these old cars. We are getting older and slower and quite frankly, I cant afford to loose any more friends.

Yes, I was getting pretty lackadaisical when one of my fuelies had a stuck needle valve and gas was pouring out of the top of the high pressure pump and onto the intake manifold. I just calmly stopped the engine and got a rag and started wiping it all up. There is a video out on YouTube that interviews an employee who says her was working on the engine of a steam car, one where gasoline makes the stream, and gas caught fire and sprayed out on his face, but that is was not very serious.Big Tanks In the High Mountains of New MexicoComment

Yes, I think it's a Doble. Tim Conway Jr. is talking about it on KFI AM 640 Los Angeles right now. He had the Doble at an event I was at about 10 years ago, and I asked him how long it takes to get enough steam pressure to drive off. He replied something like less than a minute that I thought was low, so I asked him how it takes so little time. His reply is that a gasoline (or kerosene) flame heats a surface, but I don't think it includes the time to light the pilot light if the car hasn't been used for awhile. Then water is sprayed on the hot surface that instantly turns into steam and enough pressure builds quickly to drive off at a modest pace.
Of course it probably takes more time to build up full pressure.
It appears that he was burned while lighting the pilot light or at the first spray of fuel.

People forget how dangerous gasoline can be. Not far from my house, a guy working on a car last week ended up dying when his garage went up in flames very quickly.Comment
