Re: 72 Corvette LT-1 brake calipers and MC
Without knowing what the seals that were tested were made of, it is hard to make sense of the experiment. DOT 5 fluid is supposed to be tested against swelling of SBR and EPR. The tests are supposed to be conducted by the manufacturer who self certifies. All we know is that DOT 5 that truly complies with the standard will not swell SBR or EPR excessively. I believe that someone on this board also tested new DOT 5 fluid with EDPM seals and found no swelling. It is theoretically possible that at one time DOT 5 fluid that was compatible with SBR and EPR and also with an unknown different rubber was changed so that it remained compatible with SBR and EPR but not with the unknown different rubber, and further that it happened for all manufacturers except possibly one at the same time. The only evidence for this complicated scenario is anecdotal conversation told to Gary Seymour. I would like to some actual scientific evidence, but I think it is more likely that the rebuilders have found a source of cheap seals that are not SBR, EPR or EDPM.- Top
