67 Power Glide Speedo Cable Removal at Trans End

    Help Please.

I need to replace the speedo cable on my 67 power glide, small block. Does anyone have any advice or tips as to how I can reach the trans end of the cable? The cable thumb screw is on top of the trans frame member and seemingly impossible to reach. It's very difficult to even see the thumb screw. Thanks for any help that can be provided.

even if you remove the tranny end of the cable housing, you won't be able to remove the inner cable from the tranny end. the inner cable must be removed from the speedometer end of the cable. mike mccagh

Thanks Mike. My goal is to replace the the entire cable both inner and outer housing. I just can't reach the trans end (power glide) of the cable to unscrew it.

I had the same problem when I changed rearend ratio in my PG '65. No way could I reach the cable much less the speedo housing. A few months later I had to repair/replace the neutral safety switch which, of course, requires removing the shifter (not fun, but not too difficult). As I looked down through the hole in the tunnel, there it was plain as day! Easy to access that way - not sure there would be any other way to get at it from the underside.

Thanks Kent. Are you saying I will be able to see and reach the trans end of the speedo cable so I can disconnect it if I remove the center console by the shifter?

Yes, but more than the shifter since it's encased in a rubber boot. It'll be obvious when you remove the console, shifter, boot - it's wide open to reach down and disconnect the cable.

              Wayne -
Here's a photo showing the access to the speedo driven gear coupler ass'y with shifter, NSS, boot, etc. out of the way.

Thank you very much Kent. A few years ago I did change out my neutral safety switch like you did, but I didn't pay attention to the speedo cable connection at that time. What you are saying makes complete sense. I will begin working on it tomorrow afternoon and I will let you know how it works out. Thank you again!

Thank you very much Jeff! I can see no way to access this end of the speedo cable other than from the top as you and Kent have described here. Thanks again!

does anybody know what the length of the speedo cable should be for a 67 power glide, 327. I have a new one from Zip that is 60" long but the one that came out of the car is 70" long.
