    wiring harness questions

I previously posted a question regarding the dot on the wiring schematic and got the answer as fusible links. That's great and I ordered three of the correct size, 20 gauge, to repair. or build new wiring to my ammeter gauge. Today I unwrapped part of the engine wiring harness to locate the wires and fusible link for the ammeter wiring. As I suspected it is a mess. The previous owner, prior to 1975 when I bought the car, hobbled the wiring because of a battery fume issue corroding the plugs on the firewall in the engine compartment.
There is one plug, which seems to have most of the engine compartment wires, and still is pugged and works. The other plug was cut off and the wires physically reconnected with pinch connectors.

My original idea was to make new wire feeds for the ammeter gauge, using the 20 gauge fusible links I bought, hooking them up to the posts of the horn relay and starter per the schematic, and running them directly to the gauge, bypassing the original wiring.

My next thought was replacing the engine wiring harness with one from Lectric Limited/ Zip Products. However, looking at the picture on their website, it looks like the harness has both firewall plugs. Does the engine harness use both firewall plugs? I also looked at the picture in the Zip Corvette online catalog and can only see one firewall plug!

I am feeling like this is opening a Pandora's Box, due to the hobling the previous owner did to the harnesses. I am not in a financial position right now to replace both the dash and engine harnesses, or the whole car wiring harness. The car runs and drives, I would just like a working ammeter gauge!

    Re: wiring harness questions

    William,

I highly recommend the new engine harness. It's lasted a long time but has been damaged as you've seen when you look inside. I wouldn't take a chance any longer.

And yes it has both bulkhead connectors. One is hiding behind the other in the photo.

The ZIP harness looks like it's made by M&H. http://www.wiringharness.com/ A great harness maker.

As a reminder GM gave a life expectancy of about 15 years to original harnesses. For safety reasons, install a new one.

You can buy all the harness for the car for probably $1500.00. If you deal with the company directly they may give a discount for buying the entire car or free shipping. To me it is cheap insurance to replace than the risk of fire 🔥 or be stranded on the side of the road waiting for a tow.
