    Windshield Glass today

Just wondering what the status is on options today for windshields. LOF is long gone I believe and probably new glass is Chinese, is it any good? Differences, laminations?
    Looking for my 69.
    Thanks
    Gary

Unless someone else has a better alternative, this is about as good as it gets nowadays.

Auto glass for 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973 and up to June 1974 Corvette coupe.Front, side and rear glass.

      Re: Windshield Glass today

Gary - About a year ago I looked into buying a new windshield for my 66 Coupe and bought one made by Pilkington. I had asked about PPG/PGW glass but they could not find any. My 66 Roadster currently has it's original windshield and there's enough pitting in it to make the entire glass look illuminated when you drive into the early morning sun so looked for a replacement just a few weeks ago. Wound up going to the same glass shop I used for 66 Coupe a year ago and asked for another Pilkington Windshield. Truth is...both were made in Mexico. Pilkington was bought out by Nippon Sheet Glass way back in 2007. Another choice is Fuyau, a Chinese company, they're huge and supply glass for Ford, GM, Subaru and VW IMG_2249.jpgand they've produced auto glass in a couple US locations, Illinois and Ohio. I am pleased with the Pilkington windshields I've gotten and can't comment on the Fuyau glass but suspect it's also good.

Thanks for the heads up Mike. I was afraid it all come from China now. I don't need it right away it is just something I was thinking about for the future. I remember there used to be a glass dealer at Carlisle years ago but don't recall their name, if they're even around anymore.

I needed to replace the windshield on my low mileage 92 and used a Pilkington. When I had the car judged at a Regional this brand was considered original since they bought LOF. Still of course got a deduct for date.

              Arland,

I need some tinted side glass for my 63 coupe. Will they etch all the correct information in the glass or will they add the extra DOT information?

              Thanks
              Harry

                Harry,

Just like repro headlamps, to the best of my knowledge the DOT on repro windshields is mandated by federal guidelines. Now perhaps the DOT can be placed so as to be hidden by the trim once installed.

The DOT required info is located so that it 'disappears' when installed. This is the vent window but it is the same for the door glass as well.

                    Arland,

And is it also true for windshield glass?

                        Gary,

Since all four side pieces and two rear pieces have the DOT info etched about 1/8 inch from the edge, I am assuming the windshield is the same since it has not yet been unpacked from the shipping box. The windshield will be unpacked and installed in the next few days so I can give you a definite answer in the next week or so. When ordering, I had a conversation about what was required so we both understood the need for the DOT to disappear when installed and they were savvy enough that it would be surprising if the windshield was any different.

This took longer than expected and not the best images but here's the 63 Coupe windshield DOT logo details:

                            1) Out of focus picture of the DOT info
                            2) Location of the DOT info marked with black tape
                            3) DOT info 'disappearing' with the rubber installed

If someone is offering a better alternative, please post some pictures.
