1962 Heater Box and Heater Core Refresh

Just finished the maiden voyage in this car 3000 miles cross country with no issues. This past week, I had antifreeze on the passenger side floor boards, so I assumed that I had an issue most likely with the heater core leaking. I ordered a new heater core from Paragon with a new gasket set and hoses. Here is what I found. The leak was from the 90 degree elbow hose that goes from the heater core to the control valve. When I disassembled the control valve/heater box, the hose (pictured) denigrated. To ensure that there was no issue with the heater core originally in the car, I took it to a radiator shop and it was pressure tested and flushed out. I have attached a picture of the replacement heater core and the original from the car stamped 61D.

Question: Does anyone make an original appearing 90 degree elbow hose with the raised part number?

More pictures. There were no gaskets between the heater diffuser box and the firewall, or between the outer heater cover flapper door assembly. Instead a thick black tar like material (not ATV). Question. I looked in my assembly manual, I did not see gaskets. Is the material pictured a factory application or another owner added material?

Diffuser box mounting studs. The shorter stud for clearing the exhaust manifold?

Last set of pictures. Markings inside heater diffuser box.

Also pictures of the heater dash escutcheon. The stud was separated from the steel frame when I bought the car. While the heater box is out, rewelded/primed.

Question. What is the brand/paint number for the 1962 fawn interior? OR is there a rattle can version non metallic that is close?

      Thanks Frank

The compound around your air control housing flange may be something like dum-dum. The '57 AIM (disclaimer: not intended to be necessarily correct for your '62) calls for 3686628 compound in various locations in the heater area although not that specific loc. I found same in my '57 around the housing on the engine side of the firewall, assume it to be factory knowing the history of my car. Also had an approx 1/4" thick open cell foam rubber type gasket on the interior face of the firewall on the heater core housing. The short stud is to clear ignition shielding according to some source I don't recall at the moment. Hope this may give some insight into your assy.

          Rod,
Thank you for the information very helpful. Any idea on the current source for the 3686628 compound?
