    ammeter problem

    Need help,

I replaced the ammeter in my dash last year, thinking the old one had quit working. It still does not work!
The wiring in the car is original 1967 and the previous owner had a battery problem, ( the car has factory air, so the battery is in front of the fire wall connecter ). The plug with the ammeter wiring must have been damaged from acid fumes and the previous owner cut the plug off and used crimp connectors to make the wiring work. I am suspecting this to be the location of the problem I am having, HOwever, I would like to run a pair of new wires, as a temporary band aid fix until IO can replace the dash and engine compartment harnesses. What are the colors of the wires from the ammeter and where do the connect in the engine compartment?

    Thanks for your help.

Look in your AIM for that information. It will show wire colors and pin locations in the firewall plug.

      Re: ammeter problem

Don't know if this is your problem, but my '67 ammeter quit working some time ago. The needle pointed to "0", and would not indicate either a discharge nor a charge, like it was "frozen" in that position. Turned out to be the capacitor plugged into the back of it. Unplugged the capacitor, and it started working just like it is suppose to. Might want to check that.

As you go through your decision making, please remember that GM gave a life expectancy of 15 to 25 years on harnesses. If it were me, I'd replace every wire in your 67.

          Re: ammeter problem

I had my ammeter quit after I replaced my starter years ago and found that GM used a black power wire at the starter. Well I put that to ground and that was it.
Good news is that it was easy to rewind and I rewound my ammeter. The black wire has a large terminal and is a dead ringer for a ground.

Do you have the color wiring diagram from Dr. Rebuild. If not order one as they are very helpful.
