Joe yes the reason i suggested to look at the tranny mount was if jim used the flexible motor mounts they may not show damage yet. But if there is damage to the tranny mount it could be that the mounts are moving. Remember we used to test mounts by standing on the brake and and the accelerator at the same time. I remember a 340 Dart we were checking the motor looked like it was going to fly out of the bay.

Hello Jim, you did not state if the car has an automatic or standard transmission. Assuming that it is a standard, have someone depress the clutch pedal and see if it is causing the engine to move forward. I would assume at that engine speed you would be depressing the clutch to shift. Even if mounts appear to be intact, some of the rubber materials used in construction allow quite a bit of movement. The offset of some of the newer mounts is not the same as the originals.

          Whatever ever happened here?
Did the original poster figure out his problem?

I did (figure it out). Should have posted long ago. After the second event I took a pry bar to everything that could move, and quickly discovered the transmission mount had failed. Under high torque the tail of the transmission would rise up enough to tip the engine forward and the fan blade to hit the shroud - that apparently caused enough damage to very quickly put the fan blades into the radiator.

Wow! Bill was right about the trans mount.
Thank you for coming back and posting what happened.

I second the KIRKCONNELL rebuilt schwizer fan clutch... after my original was rebuilt, it moves air like a tornado. iirc $225 and a month turn around.
