    Idler Arm '63 -'81

    Is the original 3779184 (forged 3779185) idler arm rebuildable? If so, is a kit, or a rebuild-vendor known by anyone?
    Also, is there a Julian casting date on the arm?

      As far as I know, the arms are not rebuildable and there is no date I am aware of on the arm.

      Also, beware when buying an NOS arm: not all idler arm assemblies with the 3779185 forging are the GM part number 3779184 idler arm assembly applicable to Corvettes. The frame bracket component of the 3779184 arm has a single offset. There was another idler arm assembly which used the 3779185 arm which was applicable to some 1963 Chevrolet trucks. That arm has a bracket component with TWO offsets.

          I am installing a new idler arm on my 63. I've tightened the nut to the 45 lbs and there is this gap....see picture. Is this "normal". I thought it would be flush with the relay rod.

              It appears you're missing the plastic washer and foam seal(?, washer?) that go between the arm and the steering linkage.

                  I bought a 'correct' idler arm from a Vendor with no zerk fittings etc. and it started to 'rattle' after 20K miles. It seams the bushings will degenerate due to heat from exhaust etc. Put the GM replacement on with zerk fittings and problem solved!!!!

                      Brain fade (or a Senior moment) strikes again!! The bushing was on my workbench next to the idler arm box! It's all installed and onto the adventure of finishing this chassis under a strict timeframe so that it goes up to the restoration shop to have the body put back on.
