    1966 Gas Tank

Hello, I just ordered a new gas tank from Quantra for my 1966 coupe. I know that some of their older tanks had to have the seam at the straps bent down to allow proper alignment of the filler. Has anyone who has recently installed one of Quantra's tanks have to bend the seams? If so, what procedure have you used. I assume a couple raps with a wood block would work, however I would rather not modify a welded seam if not necessary. Also, did anyone install the tank with the sending unit installed? It would be easier to install while tank is out, but I don't want to damage the fuel tube on the sender if clearance is a problem. Any further recommendations are greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for any and all help.

    John,
I've not heard of having to bend any seams on a C2 tank...C1 tanks, yes.

I would install the fuel sending unit after you install the tank.

This is the only bend I am aware of, bent on both sides....

And, it comes that way from the factory...no additional bending needed on a C2 tank...just to be clear.

Hello Leif, I was referring to the indentations where the straps cross over the seam as shown in your illustration. I installed a tank several years ago that I had to bend down the seam at the rear of the tank to allow the tank to be positioned about 1/2" further back. Thanks for the illustration, it has revived my memory somewhat.

              John,

As you describe, others have indeed talked about the necessity to further deform the rear bends on the tank where the straps touch the tank in order to allow for optimal centering of the tank full tube.

I agree that a repro tank seam requires a little more bending where the tank straps ride in order to get the tank to correctly center (fore and aft) in the fuel fuller opening. Using the original fuel tank strap that is already pre-formed also helps.

John, a few years ago we bought 3 midyear tanks from Quanta. None of those allowed the filler necks to line up with the body holes. 2 were on coupes and they were the worst. Quanta refused to replace the three. Purchases from Quanta since then. Zero. Future purchases from Quanta. Zero. Scott

New Quanta tank with old straps - no 'extra' bending required and no 'for and aft' alignment issues. When the body went back on the frame, a small sideways adjustment was needed to center the neck in the opening. Sending unit is somewhat easier to install while the tank is out but not that big of a difference when it's in.

I would like to thank all who took time to respond to my post. I installed the fuel sending unit in the tank prior to installing the tank. I bent the new straps to match the old ones. I installed the tank without modifying the flanges, and the tank aligned perfectly centered. No leaks, I'm a happy man!
