1967 upper steering column bearing replacememt

Can the upper steering column bearing be replaced without removing the column from the car?

    Thanks Bob

Bob, You'll have to remove the directional switch assembly, then the upper bearing housing so you can work the housing on the bench.

The bearing is held in by the rolled edge lip of the housing. Using a grinding tool, grind off the edge to release the bearing.

The new bearing can be epoxy glued in place. Or you could drill and tap the sides of the housing to accommodate setscrews to hold it.

If by chance when you first observe the assembly, the bearing may still be good, but the outer lip of the housing is simply loose.

To recapture it, you could use a press and socket to repeen the capture lip, or a pointed drift to peen the lip of the housing in several places to tighten it.

See this post for the bearing repair I did on a 67 Tele column. The process being the same on a Std column. Not sure which you have.

Richard, Thank you for your reply and the link to the other post. As Keith said this can done without removing the column. And it looks like no special tools will be needed. It is a Std column.

          Thanks Again Bob
