65 small block exhaust

Presently, my exhaust is two pieces consisting of the center pipe clamped to the front of the muffler. I intend to mark the position of the pipe to the muffler, remove the assembly and weld them together to replicate the OEM configuration. Any pointers would be appreciated?

From my interpretation of what you describe, this will not replicate the original configuration because you will still have the slip joint. The original configuration had the rear pipe extend all the way to the muffler where it was welded. If you simply weld it at the slip joint, the "bulge" of the slip joint will be obvious.

You might be able to do it but I don't think it will be undetectable, if that's your intention.

I like your idea. As Joe says, it could well look detectably different from the original factory appearance, but I think it’s going to look reasonably similar.
