Need Help Identifying Delco Ignition Coils

Today I picked up 2 used, vintage Delo-Remy Ignition coils at an estate sale. The estate owner had a beautiful 55 Belair convertible. So there were many extra spare parts laying around. Most everything (except the car) was used and for sale.
Digging around in some boxes I found two original Delco-Remy ignition coils. One had a full embossed part # "1115082" & "12V". The other was embossed with "081" & "12V". They both have the correct "Delco-Remy" logo on top of the coil and have magnetic studs.

I looked thru all my Delco catalogs and could not find exact listings for these coils. I think, based on the low part number (081 & 082) and 12 volt marking, that these are probably for 1955+ Chevy applications. Maybe 1955+ Corvette?

    1. Can someone tell me the original applications? Chevy V-8 or 6-cylinder? What years?
    2. I know the coils could be tested with an ohm meter. Can you provide the correct reststance and the test procedure?

    Thanking you all in advance.

    Rocco,
According to my notes I also have a coil embossed "1115082". I assume that I bought it at a swap meet at least 30 years ago. I also have a coil embossed "083" that I removed from a 1958 Chevrolet back about the same time frame which might or might not be original.

I believe that the GM #1115082 coil was a PRODUCTION-only part number. As with some Corvette coils, the on-coil part number may have been the part number for the coil+bracket assembly. In SERVICE the coil alone was known as GM #1115087.

The 1115087 (and, by extension, the 1115082 if I am correct) was applicable to 1955 and later Chevrolet V-8 but not Corvette. It was probably also applicable to other GM passenger cars and, likely light trucks of the period.

I don't have any definitive information on the '081' coil. However, it's possible it's the PRODUCTION-only part number for the 1955 Corvette V-8 coil known in SERVICE as GM #1115086.

Re: Need Help Identifying Delco Ignition Coils

        Dave & Joe,

Thanks for your prompt replies. Interesting about the different service part # when supplied with a bracket.

To complicate things the "081", not the "082" coil I purchased today has a bracket and condenser. Go figure. Maybe it has been switched.

I will try to clean them up and post a few photos when I can. Maybe someone can ID the bracket.

I bought these coils since I noticed that some early coil numbers are rare. I was hoping that maybe one of these coils could be used as a spare for my 1967 L79 with TI. It currently has the correct (original) #207 coil which is hard to find and very expensive. I also have a good 202 and an NOS 238 coil.

Hopefully someone can post the test procedure and resistance values. I have a good digital meter.

I don't understand why your finding the '081' coil with a bracket complicates anything. All coils were used with a bracket of one sort or another. Sometimes, the coils used in PRODUCTION were supplied as an assembly including the bracket and the on-coil part number represented the assembly part number. Coils in SERVICE were not supplied with a bracket and the part number or derivative embossed on the coil was the part number for the coil alone (even though it may have been exactly the same coil that was part of the PRODUCTION only assembly with the assembly part number embossed on the coil).

As I mentioned above, my guess is that the '081' coil was the PRODUCTION-only part number which was supplied as an assembly with bracket.

            Joe,

Thanks for the clarification. Of course all installed coils had some type of bracket. I'm guessing th bracket was from the 1955 Belair but will send a photo soon.
