Secure The C2 Side Pipe Insulator Using JB-Weld #8276

The Driver Side Insulator behind the Side Pipe Cover is drooping down on the front side. Upon searching this
board it appears that JB-Weld #8276 is the answer. Question>Can this be fixed without taking whole side
pipe cover off? Plan is to hold the insulator up and injecting the J/B Weld on the bottom between it and the cover.
Will let is cure till dry overnight.
Thoughts? Think it is strong enough? Comments Please>Larry P.S. If I have to to will take it off;just trying to save a
    little time.

    Larry,
I had a similar issue a year or so ago and attempted to fix the "drooping" issue as you describe with JB Weld. I was able to dab some of the mixture along about a one foot section and then I clamped it overnight...it lasted about six months. This past spring, I took the cover off the car and did it correctly. The insulation is cemented along both the top and bottom...full length of the insulation. This time I used 3M Panel Bond. Clean both the insulation and the cover, thoroughly, with lacquer thinner before applying the new bond. It's rock solid on there now and I don't think it's going to droop again during my lifetime.

Leif: It's just amazing how many similar problems we have had with these C2's! Have question for
you on the "3M Panel Bond#"08115". It is a 2-part epoxy that has to be mixed>correct? Can this
item and J/B Weld #8276 be mixed for the amount needed and the remainder in the container be used
at a later date? OR is it a "one and done" with the nozzles getting plugged and then becoming a throw
away item like most "super glue" applicators? At any rate thank you very much on helping me. Larry

The nozzles used for the 3M Panel Bond blend the two part mix in the nozzle so there is no additional mixing. See the applicator gun in my picture. You can then remove the nozzle and toss, reseal any remaining panel bond and save for another day using a new nozzle.
BTW, over the last 55-60 years, all the issues that you or I have had with out C2 have been had with every other owner, I'm sure.

There is also a 3M 08116 panel bond. The only difference I can determine is clamping and cure time. Leif, which did you use?
(One of my forward curved insulation pieces dropped off a couple years ago; luckily I didn't run over it.)

            Owen,
I used the #08115. For that small forward piece, I don't know that I would go to the expense of buying the 3M gun necessary for the panel bond cartridges. Take the cover off the car, thoroughly clean the inside of the cover and the insulation and then apply some JB Weld to both the upper and lower portions of the cover and clamp in the insulation. The 3M gun with product is about $120.

Will this/these 3M panel bond products work to secure the hood skin yo the frame? Just the frame members under the hood.

                James,
I wouldn't use panel bond on the braces under the hood..."hood gum drop" adhesive works well for that...found at paint and body supply houses. DAP Premium Polyurethane Roof and Flashing Sealant can, also, be used. Panel bond would be used to bond the hood to the outer edges of the bracing but NOT the interior sections...you want that area to have some flex/cushion to it.

                  Leif,

I've heard of the DAP sealant used on hood frames. Is the "gum drop" sealant something a body shop would have? if I said hood gum drop would they look at me like i was nuts? I'd like to get the product found so that I can get started on the hood.

                    James,
If they don't have the exact same product, they would know what you were talking about and offer an alternative. But, again, the DAP product works very well and is readily accessible and can be applied with an inexpensive, caulking gun.
