    Seatbelt Grommet application

Did the 70 use grommets around the outer seat belts?
    Vendors list them for 69 - 71.
There isn't much space between where the seat belt mounts and the top of the sill which suggests a grommet would need to be fit abutting the sill plate? Given 69 outer seatbelts mount differently, I can see how a grommet may make sense in that case.

Here's a link to the part I refer to.

For 70, did the carpet cover the area where the belt mounts, a slit in the carpet to route the belt through, or was the belt mounted over the carpet as on the inside belt?

My January 29 dated 1970 does not have that grommet and the seat belts are bolted over the carpet. I believe all of 1970 and 1971 were configured like this. In fairness I haven't looked at my 1971. Now you have given me something to look at since interior is not my strong suite. It has been well over 20 years since I judged C3 interior.

A quick look at the TIM&JG shows a good picture on page 14 of the 6th Edition of the 1970-72 Manual. Fig. 11.14 at the top of the page. That picture looks very familiar. .

Picture I 1.15 in the 1968-69 manual shows the grommet.
I'm with Terry - I believe that this was only late 68-69, not 70-71 despite what the catalog companies say.

        Thanks all.
The grommet makes sense for the seat belt design of the 69 and probably the 68.
Since the belt is bolted directly to the side of the rocker channel on the 70, a grommet doesn't make sense to me.
I don't know where the vendors get their application data, seems to be off for this item.

My 3 star 1971 which scored 99%(they do go over the sheets with the owner) for the interior does not have them. I know that my keys were not correct, not sure what else I missed if anything on the int or how many items equal 1%.

In my years of judging interiors, I have never seen a grommet on any 1970 or '71. But I have seen labeling errors in parts catalogs.

I am getting ready to install my outer seat belts, checked the AIM one last time before punching holes in my carpets. Strangely, the AIM shows a grommet for 70 on page F28 and for 71 on page F30. The grommet was noted as being part of the carpet assy. This grommet made sense for 69 and maybe 68 which had a different fastening point for the outer seat belt. It would seem to be very tight fitting, near the fastening point for 70, can't see how it would provide much function unless the seat belt does NOT fasten on top of the carpet? I don't doubt NCRS judges expertise, just wondering if this is bad info from the AIMs? Does the belt get fastened on top of the carpet or behind?

This is a case of the drawing in the AIM(s) not getting updated. There is no grommet in that position for 1970 or 1971. The ultimately cars tell the tail.

I'm getting ready to install my outer seat belts, just want to be sure I have it right. Installed new carpets, only one chance to get this right. Do the outer seat bolts get bolted on top of the carpet, hole punched through the carpet for the bolt? Or are they mounted behind the carpet; belt fed through a slit just wide enough for the belt to fit through?

Roger, the 6th Edition of the TIM/JG on page 14 (interior), figure I 1.14 1970-1971 seat-belt mounting bolt should answer the question.
