I used escrow.com to buy my last car. It made both the seller and me feel secure about the transaction.

Update on scammers. I created a new ad today on Autotrader for my '03 Z06. I had a reply that he would pay my asking price and then an update said he was adding shipping cost from his quote. I replied 'SCAM'. What was another 'Red flag' was that I would receive $100 to hold it.

It's no problem to take cash for a vehicle. What one should do (and agree upon with the buyer) is take the cash to your bank. Tell the seller you will be depositing the money. The bank will count / check the cash right then and there in front of you. They will ask what / why the money.......and you tell them you are selling a car, with the buyer right there. You as the seller are free and clear of any sort of wrong doing as you are providing transparency. Get a photo of the buyers drivers license just for your records (to say nothing for a bill of sale)

Wire transfers are still my preferred method of funds. In some instances, the money can be verified in a short period of time. Other times, it can take longer. Depends if one of the banks uses an intermediary bank for wire as well as how busy the Fed is. And I have a separate account just for wires......
