    Re: Not Really Technical but Important

    It sucks that after almost three years we're still dealing with this. Hoping for a speedy recovery for those who are ill.

    I'm a physician in my day job. I stopped wearing a mask in my office over a year ago, after I had been vaccinated. A notice informs patients of my choice so they can opt out of seeing me if they choose. There is very little convincing data that supports wearing anything but an N95 mask that has been properly fitted and tested. There is even some data that has recently come out that suggests possible higher mortality rates in those that wear the common cloth non-N95 masks. See attached articles. Briefly, it seems the mask may capture some larger aerosol droplets with virus particles (although not enough to prevent infection it seems, since the masks also do not show a lower infection rate) that can then dry out and release smaller droplets or perhaps even free viruses that can enter farther into the respiratory airways, resulting in a more severe infection. This has been termed the Foegen effect, after the author who published this. Think of it this way: Despite being quadruple vaxxed and the extremely stringent precautions taken around him, including mandatory masking, weekly testing, and social distancing rules at the White House, Biden still managed to get infected. The latest version of this virus is extremely contagious, one of if not the most contagious viruses known, but it also is much less virulent than the earlier versions, thankfully.

    Just my 2 cents.

    Mike

      The vaccines keep you out of the hospital, they never said they were a cure

        I wasn't counting on a "cure", just prevention from infection, as they were advertised to be at a 95%+ effectiveness before this variant. But now even Fauci says:"DR. FAUCI: One of the things that's clear from the data [is] that even though vaccines - because of the high degree of transmissibility of this virus - don't protect overly well, as it were, against infection". People need to recognize that and what has changed from last year.

          Covid is nothing more than another SARS virus...similar to the common cold or the flu. It isn't going to go away and don't expect a cure for it either. It's just something else that we'll have to learn to live with.
          In the USA alone...CDC estimates that flu has resulted in 9 million – 41 million illnesses, 140,000 – 710,000 hospitalizations and 12,000 – 52,000 deaths annually between 2010 and 2020."

            Covid +++++

            I made it home from Mobile without any problems. I was quad vac'd, got a mild case last month after returning from a 10 day trip to Alaska, very mild symptoms. I have received numerus phone calls from fellow judges regarding future Regionals (Redmond & Frisco). To solve the problem as in Mobile, I suggest all participants have documentation verifying they are vac'd and take a covid test they bring from home and take the test on cite and display results at the various registration locations. PROBLEM SOLVED, DO NOT ARRIVE ALREADY INFECTED! Just a suggestion.
