1972 454 water pump fan mount

Have I been bubba-ed? My fan mount has two studs. I've never seen this configuration anywhere in the literature.

It's making it impossible to remove the WP pulley so I can remove the shroud (to replace the radiator).

    Help!

    Thanks in advance.

Your fan clutch mounting should have FOUR STUDS just like the ones seen in your photo.

      Huh...

I've been reading a lot of threads that seem to indicate that I can get my shroud out if I remove the water pump pulley. This will be completely impossible with these studs and the water pump <-> crankshaft belt in place (which has no tensioner in my car, and shouldn't as far as I know).

I might pull the water pump unless there are alternative methods of getting the pulley off. I've thought about removing the water pump anyhow, as I'm seeing what appears to be significant shaft play (unless it's the pulley???).

You should be able to remove the studs using, at the worst, vice grip pliers. If you damage the studs, just replace with new ones equivalent to GM #3964274.

You should have no fan belt tensioner UNLESS the car is equipped with C-60. In the latter case, a tensioner was used.

After all Beltane removed, the pulley should pull off. It may need the gentle persuasion of a few hammer taps.

I've removed studs using the double nut technique. Much better than always-fail Vise Grips.

The 5/16-18 threads are so short on these studs I don’t know how they could be double- nutted.

I’ve used vice grips successfully many times, although never on these studs. The trick is they have to be adjusted exactly right and they have to substantially bite into the material.
I've done it, so I know it works.
Vise Grips just ruin parts, so they are absolutely last resort for me, and I'm usually disappointed I used them.
