    cold idle question 67 427/435

I had the 3 carbs off my 67 427/435 restored by a source that was highly recommended on this sight. The carbs came back perfect! I bolted them on and she started right up and idled. My question is this, when I first start it when it's cold, the car idles super low, almost stalling, so I keep the rpms up for a minute or so, until it warms up a little then, it will idle around 900. I thought I read somewhere on this forum that there is supposed to be a high idle mechanism, so that when starting cold and the choke is on it keeps the RPM's up around 1,500 or so. I have adjusted the manual idle screw and when the car is warmed up it idles fine 700-800. I hesitate to touch any of the emulsion screws on the carb because the carb shop said that all settings were preset as part if the restoration and no need to touch them. So, I have left these alone because I didn't want to mess anything up.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks

I know little about the tri-power setup, but have you tried adjusting the fast idle setting? It's probably on the center carb that has the choke.

You might want adjust the idle speed and mixture first. The tune up section of the service manual will take you through the process step by step.

Call your carb restore and he should be able to tell you how to adjust the fast idle. It might be in the service manual as well.

The other question would be, while you're checking the fast idle setting, is the choke even working at all?
The choke and fast idle settings work together to ensure the engine will idle at the proper RPM when cold and then will transition the choke to open and idle at normal operating temperature.
After the engine warms up, you have to tap the throttle to "kick" the mechanism off of fast idle and to open the choke.

Thanks for the comments. As far as I can see the choke is working properly. Pretty simple choke system. I think the idea to contact the shop ( Phil Custom Carb NJ) who did the restoration is good idea. I'll do that tomorrow.

The fast idle speed recommendation (set with the engine fully warmed up) and how to set it is in the 1967 Chassis Service Manual.

            Don't leave home without one.

Mark , check with your Carb. rebuilder , like Duke mention fast idle cam choke is set fully warm to achieve proper rpm. also you can adjust your final idle rpm and any idle mixture's when fully warm, but when cold you must set up choke spring tenion and choke pulloff adjustment its all explain in the 67 service manual it may take a few shots at it at morning cold to make it work right.
