1969 Convertible Underbody Heat Shield Installation

Getting ready to do body drop (finally) and need help in properly locating/installing the foam Heatshield in the Transmission Tunnel. The drawing, Sheet B6.5 on page J66 is worthless. Could someone provide a picture or description of where the heat shield should be mounted with a point of reference for the location? When disassembling the car, it appeared that at one time the shield had been glued to the top of the transmission housing?
    Any help greatly appreciated, Steve

    That's where it goes.
Find your photo, and glue it to the transmission in that same spot.

      Mike,

My 6/69 L46 had the insulation you referred to. It was attached with metal clips that were riveted to the body. But glue would work too.

As I thought about it, a point of clarification -

Which heat shield on a 69 are you discussing?
There is one that clips in the transmission tunnel, one that glues to the transmission, and a couple that fasten to the floor.

Lay the positive cable in first. It attaches along the tunnel under the insulation (at least our April vert 68 did pretty sure 69 was the same). Replace the cable holders now if needed. Same for the clips that hold in the shield. The factory somehow got to both sides of the rivet I think replacements can be bolted in or pop riveted(large heavy duty pop rivet). You don't want the insulation or positive cable to become detached and make contact with the drive shaft.

The 68 has the J shaped hooks riveted to the fire wall and a few in the tunnel that hook into the shield via slots in the shield. I remember correctly, they need to be bent out at first then inward a bit towards the body to get it tight to the floor.
Similar process to what you see on the back side of a cheap picture frame.

Another tip: have the shifter gate properly adjusted(on a stick car of course). Getting the alignment tool in there with body on and insulation in isn't fun.
I put a shield in with the body on. Impossible to do with out bending thus messing up a new shield a little. Royal PITA! The 68 doesn't have the removable trans cross member...extra fun. It almost became removable.

Sorry for the confusion. I should have been more precise in my description. The reference and the shield that I am referring to is the foam shield and not the foil covered one. As stated, when disassembling it appeared that it might have been glued to transmission itself but there was nothing left of the shield and very faint evidence that it had been there.

Thanks to all that responded. I will go back to see if pictures picked up the detail on the location. If anyone has information that will help with locating the location that would be greatly appreciated.

            Thanks Again Steve
