Hello everyone, I would like to change my exhaust on my 72 Lt1. I would like to keep the original style exhaust, as I would like to get the car judged again. The last time it was judged was in 2012. The current exhaust is in perfect condition except for a small hole in the passenger side muffler. Is it possible to fix the hole, it about the size of a large quarter.

The right side muffler is almost always the first to go. However, are you saying that the mufflers you have are the original mufflers installed on the car? I'd be absolutely amazed if the original mufflers, especially the right side muffler, lasted 50 years.
As far as the hole goes, that's just the "tip of the iceberg". The hole was likely caused by corrosion and there's much more corrosion damage inside the muffler.In Appreciation of John Hinckley -

Given your description: what you describe i.e. rust would be a deduction under Condition. Flight Judging evaluates both appearance of Originality and Condition. As described, your exhaust would receive NO deductions under Originality as it is the original exhaust.
Repairing/replacing your muffler at this point would recover those Condition points. However, replacement likely will generate Originality point deductions. Repair might generate Originality point deductions depending on workmanship quality (undetectable repair) e.g. Finish, Configuration
Your decision, but you should consider point gain one place vs point loss in another.

I replaced my 25 year old Allen's aluminized muffler last year because of a small rust hole. Afterwards, I cut it open to check the construction and the insides were pure rust. Welding

Larry, if your exhaust is the original to the car, you've fortunate. Wire open the heat riser valve and whenever you drive the car, make sure you warm up the exhaust system to burn off any condensation. Embrace the fact that your hole is only the size of a quarter and don't change a thing.Comment

We replaced our 72 LT1 C60 with a Corvette Centeral 68-72 2 3/2" aluminized mufflers & exhaust pipes, and recieved a minimal deductionFred Hickey

No one makes the correct front pipes with the swage, there are close rear pipes and mufflers which are welded(Corvette Central) however they are also not exactly like the originals however they score better than most others, NO systems currently made are doublewall or what GM called laminated pipe.
If you do replace your original exhaust (I side with TIMG and say keep the original) I would be interested in purchasing all or what ever parts you do not wish to keep.James A Groome
