    Rekey/Recode 60 - 64 Ignition Lock

I've been all over You Tube.

Anyone have a video or instructions on how to rekey a 60 - 64 ignition lock?

    Thanks

    Harry,

I brought my 63 ignition to my local locksmith and he did it for me. $25.00 I believe.

Finding the correct wafers to rekey the lock is not an easy task. Anyone have some wafers they wish to part with for some $$$.

I'm looking for wafers for key code 9163. They are for a 60 to 64 ignition lock.

            Thanks

After calling about 8 locksmiths in the area I finally found one that knows what a C2 lock looks like and can rekey it. I needed to make an appointment for next Monday.

Lesson learned, like all other vintage car restoration, folks that can fix parts are in short supply. As a backup I ordered a 60-64 ignition lock from Corvette America and will sit on it till I need it. I have a feeling they will disappear soon also.

                Harry,

How does the ignition lock from CA compare to the originals? I have a '64 and would like to have a spare for the future.

                  James,

At first glance they are the same, but:
                  • I would assume the CC lock is made in China as opposed to the US
                  • The metal is more silver in color (not visible when installed)
                  • I rekeyed/recoded the CC with the original wafers to my key, should have had a locksmith make the change. Installed the lock in the ignition switch and it worked fine for about 10 seconds then it jammed. I had to drill it out. I probably didn't secure the retained clip tight enough.
                  • I ordered another lock that I will not rekey.
                  • The wafers from the CC clip would not fit in an original lock, too thick. This may have contributed to the failure in my switch as the wafers were much thinner and probably rattled around.

Summary, If you get a new switch as a spare, leave it alone and you will have a second key. Unless a locksmith can make it function properly.

Hint, if you have a spare ignition switch, do all the testing of the new lock on your workbench before you put it in the car.

The first lock I got was from Paragon, quality was excellent, please see my comments in the prior post.

Should have said CA in my last post not CC.

Paragon is out of stock, so the one I received yesterday was from CA (Corvette America) and is going back:
                    • The face has two holes, so it's for a passenger car
                    • It wobbles in the ignition switch
                    • When installed I could turn it without the key
                    • I could not get it out as the face moved and blocked the hole to the release button/spring
                    • Essentially poor quality

                    Back to Paragon

                    Oh well!

                      Harry,

Thanks for the update. I will assume they are out of stock due to a supply chain issue. I'll hold off for a while and try to order one this fall from Paragon.

                      Thanks,

                      James
