    C5 Steering wheel lock

The steering wheel on my 99 won't unlock. When started I get the message Pull Key and wait 10 seconds. On the second attempt it says to Service Column Lock. Managed to get lock relay out from passenger foot wheel and it appears to be ok. There is an internet fix, but to permanently removes the steering column lock function. Any help would be appreciated.

make sure you have a fully charged battery. The C5 electronics are very sensitive to battery voltage

        John:
Thank you I have a LMC5 on order, but it permanently overrides the anti theft system on the car. Wheel is forever unlocked and fuel shut off no longer is in effect.

          Wes
In a seminar on the topic at Carlisle, Paul Koerner, stated that in regards to voltage, when early C5 owners replaced their batteries with the lowered reserve capacity amperage batteries from 2003 and up, then the problem became apparent. Koerner says the fix is to use the early C5 OEM battery specs. AC Delco battery 800 CCA 110 RC. The later I believe were lowered to 90 RC.

My 2000 C5 still has the fix but I use the 800 CCA 110 RC Delco battery sold through AutoZone or O'Reilly

                Re: C5 Steering wheel lock

Had that happen to my 99 back in the day. One solution was to grab the steering wheel and jerk hard when you as you turned key. Part of the recall was to remove the locking plate so wheel was never locked again. If locking pin was in any bind when it was to retract, the battery voltage might not be enough to actually retract the pin. Was an pain in the rear to say the least.

Isn't this a recall on these cars ?

yes, recall 01044. Mine was an automatic: harness # 88952427 and nut # 26056108. Harness did away or something to the electronics, and nut was for taking out the locking plate under steering wheel as I recall.
