    69 427/400 Carb stud finish

Should the stud to attach the air cleaner be bright zinc or a dark finish. The one I removed is the latter but the repop's are bright zinc.

    Thanks,

    Jack

Looking through my various books, and of course not knowing for absolute sure what I'm viewing is original, I tend to believe this stud was not bright zinc. I'm also going to go with the one that I took off the car which looks very slightly different at the base than the repop so I would not be surprised if it's original to the car. Seems like many, many items like this, bolts, etc, get reproduced in bright zinc even though they should not be.

      Hi Jack,

Dunno about '69, but the TFP stud finish for '67 tripowers (L68; L71; and L89) is black phosphate.
...can't imagine why that would change in '68 to '69, but who knows, eh?
      thx,
      Mark

          Gary,

I've lately been cross checking the part numbers against AMK and found many with the correct finish and head marks. Some times, given the choice, I will pick the incorrect head mark but with the correct finish. Also, for trans mount, I found some correct bolts at Inline Tube.

I agree Mark, I'm going with the phosphate stud. Thanks.

This may not be for everyone but one approach to getting what you want is to do it yourself as I do. The first thing I generally do with newly bought repro hardware is to put it a muriatic solution and strip off the bright zinc and get to raw steel. Then I use whatever plating/finishing product that meets my criteria. It requires an initial investment (I use the Caswell system for many) but if you are doing a quantity of fasteners over time it is well worth it. You can easily do cad or dull zinc, dichromate, black or grey phosphate, etc. It boils down to- you get what you want, not what someone has to sell. Just a thought.
