The original 1969 cap was a GM #1971244, aka Delco D308R, with aluminum contacts and black color.
The GM #800061 was used for L-88 and ZL-1. However, it became the SERVICE cap for all 1963-69 Corvettes in February, 1969 when the 1971244 was discontinued from SERVICE. The 1971244 continued to be used in PRODUCTION through 1974 for most Corvette and other Chevrolet applications. The 800061 had copper contacts and was produced in both black and brown versions. The 1971244 later came back into the SERVICE inventory before it was discontinued and replaced by non Delco manufactured caps in the 1990's
If one finds a black 800061 it is externally identical to a 1971244 as the copper contacts cannot be seen once installed.
My 1969 small block was originally equipped with a 1971244. I can say that for certain. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

A D308 cap will not have the "R"; a D308R cap should have the "R" unless it's a very late-manufactured cap in which case it will probably not have any raised script, at all, on the top. Both the D308 and D308R were GM #1971244.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Thank you Joe for correcting the actual number. I guess the point I was trying to make is the OP needs a D308R cap for his 69 car. To go one step further not all sealed boxes labeled D308R will have the correct embossment for his 69 car. If you are looking for certain markings do not buy a cap in a sealed container. Always look at it in the open. All 1969 Corvettes need a PATENT PENDING R cap for maximum judging points.- Top

One thing that everyone should be aware of: these caps were used across ALL GM car and truck lines during the 1969-74 period. That means that they were being manufactured by the millions and there were likely MANY molds being used. Those molds might have had slightly different versions of the script. I'm sure that all had the "Delco-Remy" and the "R" in this period. However, as far as the rest goes, I'm not so sure that all were identical, even during any model year. What has been observed on a few original cars may very well not extrapolate to every car.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Thanks Dave, Joe and EJ
Its going to be like Christmas around my house when this cap gets here!
If it's incorrect, I know where I can get a cap that is correct for $350. The same place I was able to find the NOS 207 coil for a small fortune. The coil should arrive today via FedEx. For what I paid for it, I'm expecting it to be wrapped in gold foil ha ha1971 coupe LS5 454/365hp
