Help for the restrictive "dual snorkel" air cleaner, '63-'65 250/300 HP 327s

A recent chassis dyno test of a "Special 300 HP" engine configuration revealed that this dual snorkel air cleaner is very restrictive. Initial discussion is in the following thread:

    https://www.forums.ncrs.org/showthre...ecial-camshaft

The same post is on the Corvette Forum with more discussion:

Also on the CF is a thread on an inexpensive and easily reversible fix for this problem, and it will also introduce you to Baldwin filters if you are not currently familiar with them.

Duke what do you think of reversing the lid?years ago this was common.

When I bought my '64 in 1980, the previous owner had drilled evenly spaced, 1/4 inch diameter holes on the vertical outer perimeter and the outer horizonal bottom of the dual snorkel base for more air. Probably not a big increase in air volume, but better than the stock configuration. I replaced it with a correct original one for flight judging. Wish I wouldn't have sold it now that the car is done being flight judged.

I wouldn't mind the mod shown on the CF, but I don't think it looks good, maybe a slightly shorter air filter to reduce the gap wouldn't look as bad. I get the functionality, just no pleasing to the eye.

Yes, I remember doing that from my high school years, but don't know if it will seal properly on your engine. Give it a try.

There's a new post on the CF air cleaner thread... took an old base that was missing one snorkel, removed the other and drilled several 1 3/8" holes around the back side of the base.

The OE filter element is on the small size - only about half the filter area of the 3 x 14" element used beginning in '66. The PA2009 is maybe halfway between.
