Try your local alternator/starter shop. Here are before & after rebuild for about $70 in Austin, TX.

Not to steal your post but I have a question regarding the red isolator on the battery terminal at the back of the alternator. The unrestored alternator shows a ridge that keeps the rubber boot attached while the restored alternator's isolator is smooth. My restored alternator has a smooth isolator as well and the rubber boot will not stay in place. Which is correct?

Here is a "65" I had cleaned at local shop. The red isolator is still the stock item.

          Alan,

I replied to a similar post last week providing some info, but the poster never reached back out to me. If you like you can contact me via my email address and leave a contact number to discuss. I just don't want to go on and on thru the DB. I have a great source that I have been using for years. I have an original 65 alternator, and it has the lip on the red bushing. The rubber boot will not stay on without it. So as long as the harness has a rubber boot, the alternator should have a lipped bushing to retain it.

              Bob,
Fred Hudson also does excellent work. You can find his contact information in the Driveline. You will find him to be a very nice gentleman to do business with.

Be careful you don't trade a Condition issue for an Originality issue. Tumble is typical cleanup method used by alternator rebuilders. This often will obliterate part number and date code stampings as well as destroy original finish. By fixing a Condition issue, you may have created Originality issues with Configuration (stampings no longer readable), Date (no longer readable), and Finish (tumbled vs smoother cast).

                    Perry,

The red bushing in Alan's post #4 is the the factory used isolator to keep the rubber boot in place, the early 63 alternators used a flat isolator sort of like a washer and that was changed sometime during the 63MY I believe. It was terrible keeping the rubber cover in place and in my case you had to flex the wire up to keep/hold the rubber cover against the alternator case.

Typically they will blast the par with sharp abrasive that as mentioned above wipes out key details, and it changes the surface, perhaps a glass bead will clean it up but in my experience even that will wipe out dates on aluminum.

That makes a lot of sense to me. My alternator has a flat reddish brown isolator that has no lip so the boot will not stay in place. However my car is a June build so I would say not an early 63 car.
