    67 interior lights

My interior lights remain on when switched off and the doors are closed. I checked the door switches and removed the headlight switch and they are still on with the harness un plugged. before i start removing the kick panls does any one have any solutions?
    Thanks
    Bill

    Bill,
Sorry to hear you're having issues. How did you check the door switches? Did you reset them by grabbing the end on the switch with a pair of needle nose pliers and gently pulling them all the way out? If not, try that as it usually solves the problem.

Did you check to make sure the light switch knob reostat is not turned to the far left which will keep the interior lights on?

Leif no I did not try that and I will. James I removed the switch and sprayed with contact cleaner. I will double check reostat. I was surprised that the lights would stay on with the switch out of the circuit.

I could be wrong but I think that the lights in question are fed thru the light switch itself so they should not work with the light switch removed from the circuit . You may need to get a wiring schematic to track your problem down . Hope this helps Jeff

The power to the interior lights is fed from a dedicated fuse (bottom fuse?) in the fuse panel (orange wire). The lights work by completing the ground circuit by the various switches with the white wire. You probably have a white wire shorted to ground in your system. Try removing the door plunger switches and isolate the switches from ground. If the headlamp switch is disconnected there will be no ground circuit to the courtesy lights.

Just to add a bit more....

Most times this is caused by the door switches. Have a helper push on one while you push the other. If it is one of them or both, as Leif mentioned pull on the plunger with a tool. When you close the door they self adjust.

If lights are still on, a white wire is likely shorted to ground somewhere. Keep in mind there is also a courtesy lamp under the rear deck on a convertible or up in the roof on a coupe. The white wire and routing to either location should be checked too.

The Orange circuit comes from a fuse to the lighter, brake lamps(via pedal switch), glove box lamp, hazard flasher and courtesy lamps.

Orange also goes the the headlight switch for the feed for the dash indicator lamps via the dark green wire to a separate fuse in the panel then to the gray wires for the lamps. Pulling the headlight switch connector does not affect the other Orange wire circuits, including courtesy lamps.
