    Exhaust header clean up

I am tired of looking at the rust on my exhaust headers. They really stand out compared to the rest of the engine compartment. I am aware that there may have been some engine paint on them coming from the factory which likely burned off.

Any suggestions on how to improve their appearance, that would pass judging?

    Regards,
    Jerry

jerry I remove the manifolds and wire wheel them back to natural color. You will need a couple of different shapes to get into all of the nooks. I put them back on the car and get the engine up to operating temperature then I spray WD - 40 on them. it stinks but the look great. do this every 6 months or so.

re paint, Some had, some did not have, paint on exhaust headers. Your year's Technical Information Manual and Judging Guide will have that information.

As to coatings, easily detected, and will result in deductions for "Finish". On the other hand, rust, especially heavy rust, will garner deductions for "Condition".

Pick your poison. Just be aware, judging wise, you may be trading one deduction for another. i.e. do what you like.

Those "wire brush-WD 40 every now and then" suggestions may be a good place to start before going to the heavy goo stuff.
