Confirming fiberglass patch/repair under wheelwell and undercoating question.

    Hi Folks,

In talking with original owner of my LT-1, he mentioned that he had spun out on ice in the car sometime between 71 and 76 and cracked the right side fender. Do you see any evidence of this in these pictures, or am I looking at the wrong area? It also could be him mis-remembering (maybe its the other side )

It also looks like there is a coating under the wheel well so that might also obscure it. I was also curious why there would be an 'anti rust' kind of coating on Fiberglass.

Thanks again for this great forum.

    Mick

    Mick,
I'll let the body experts answer the first part of your question.
As to the second part, the undercoating was used as a shield against stones hitting the underside of the fiberglass and, then, fracturing/cracking the paint on the exterior surface.

Great context Leif, of course, that makes sense now.

It's hard to conclude much from the photos. The undercoating over and around the bonding strip is thicker than most cars. It could have been applied to cover up fiberglass repairs, or the dealer or owner may have just applied extra.

Does the wheel lip have the notch and then 4-5" behind it a crescent recess?
The photos do not make it very apparent.
Most of the heavy undercoat on my car is behind/above rear of the wheelhouse area.

Here is the drivers side front wheelhouse looking forward and one looking rearward in the drivers front wheelhouse.

Just updating this thread... I received the damage photo from the original owner - which happened sometime in the early-mid 70's

I think we're going to need to look for a bigger patch! lol
