I have a 57 fuelie in the middle of restoration. my axles had bearing and retainer rusted on. I cut bearing and retainer off. trying to replace the proper bearing retainer. The correct bearing was sent to me, but the new bearing retainer was too shallow. can't find the deeper version. axle housing may have been built in 1956? the bearing retainer I need is 1 inch deep. So far everyone has the one that is 1/4 inch deep? anyone have a suggestion? pretty sure the axle housing was built in 56, but on a 57. Where can I get two one inch deep?

Dee,
Photos of the axle housing and its ends would be helpful.

Re: 56 or 57 rear axle housing bearing retainer
Jim I am still trying to figure out this website. I did send it with the first letter D not A. At this point I am not sure how to send a message in this forum. I'm still experimenting. Now I am trying to send a picture of the retainer. It usually takes me a while to catch on, but I keep trying- Top

Re: 56 or 57 rear axle housing bearing retainer
Just to be super clear, the Corvette Forum is a different site than this one. Not saying I prefer one over the other. I happen to go to both pretty much daily. Apparently I have too much time on my hands.
I don't know if DZAUTO spends time on this site or not.
I don't think anyone on here recommending you consult him has anything against this site or anyone on it. But having seen some of his posts on rear-ends on the other site, I would look to contact him if I were you. I had issues with my 54 rear end and he was helpful.- Top

Dee,
Without photos of the axle housing and ends, it's hard to tell what you have. With photos you'll receive some guidance.
BTW, welcome to NCRS.

Re: 56 or 57 rear axle housing bearing retainer
I do come here some, but I also spend more time on the CORVETTE FORUM. Even though I've been an NCRS member since 1980, I just never fit the NCRS mold.
I have a new home email address twparsons6@gmail.com
By the way, I FULLY UNDERSTAND his dilemma and can thoroughly explain----------------with pictures, if he so chooses.
AND, from what he has explained so far, WITHOUT QUESTION, he has a 1956 axle housing under his 57. I'm positive that everyone here knows for a fact that there was NO SUCH THING as a 56 style axle housing installed under a 57 at the St. Louis assembly plant. NOPE, did not happen!- Top
