1970 Wiper Door Vacuum Relay Screw Assemblies

The wiper door vacuum relay is attached with two 9421033 screw assemblies. AMK has them as #10-24 x 5/8" hex head screw with conical attached washers and finished in black phosphate. In Figure M 22.12 in the Judging Guide they appear yellow cad. Which is correct?

    Thanks,
    Allen

I think you are seeing an illusion of the limits of the photographic reproduction process in the manual. Please note the first paragraph of the first page of the Introduction.

Those fasteners are black as I recall, but I am not sure about the conical part or the 10-24 part either. I would have to do some hands-on investigation to be sure, but a self tapping screw is, I think more likely. The timing is poor for the hands-on investigation. Have some patience.

          Just as an FYI...

I had always thought these to be black phosphate as well. They are on a 71 here, as well as a 77 I have recently worked on. In fact, I bought a bulk bag of #100 recently, removed the zinc from 20 of them and made them black phosphate.

My late 72? Silver zinc, plain as day, for both headlight relays as well as the wiper door relay inside the right fender.

It just goes to show that there are no absolutes when it comes to the finishes of the fasteners on these cars.

What about the thread type and length as well as the conical washer, Pat?

It is attaching two flat pieces of metal. The conical shape makes no sense to me, but stranger things have happened.
Unless there is a nut they thread into (and I don't think there is) the 10-24 makes no sense to me either.

10-24 with integral external toothed washer (SEMS).
No conical, and I would state they are 1/2 inch length. That's what I ordered, and they match.

I'll break this post into three or four post's so it's not so confusing.
1968 AIM UPC1, Sht D3 shows 9421033 screws holding the wiper door actuator to inner fender.
UPC 12, Sht A14 shows 9421033 screws for the head light relays.
1969 AIM UPC1, Sht D3 shows 423595 screws holding the wiper door actuator to inner fender.
UPC 12, Sht A14 shows 9421033 screws for the head light relays.
1970 had a plate that held the two relays to the front reinforcement. That plate used 423595 screws to secure the plate to the header. The headlight relays to the plate used 9420494 screws. The wiper relay used 9421033 screw.
1971 wiper relay used 9421033 screw. The headlight relay used 423595 directly into the header bar, UPC12, Sht A3.
1972 wiper relay used 9421033 screw. The headlight relay used 423595 directly into the header bar, UPC12, Sh A3.

AMK shows this for # 9421033
                  9421033.png

                  AMK shows this #423595
                  423595.png
I think both of these are #10-24 screws.

AMK does not show a 9420494.

Re: 1970 Wiper Door Vacuum Relay Screw Assemblies

My 1970, July 7th build, which Allen is probably most interested in, used the following screw for the wiper door relay.
                    20220215_114858_1.jpg

It is a #10-24 screw, measures 0.6" under the washer to the end, the washer measures 0.4" diameter and is captive to the screws. 5/16" hex. I would call it black phosphate.

The screws holding the headlight relays look like these, an integral washer on the hex.
                    20220215_134125_1.jpg

The AIM calls for 9420494 here, but I am not so sure that's what is here.

1971 Sitting here. Wiper door relay is below.
                        20220215_133848_1.jpg

I could not get a picture of the headlight relays. Poor spot in the building.
This should be 9421033, but it's different than some others....
I don't have a 72 here either. Will need to wait until get into the Library and look.

Thankfully I took pictures of my car previously.

                            1972 #22917

Headlight relay screws are the external toothed SEMS screw I expected.
Wiper door relay screw has the flat (possibly conical) washer as mentioned elsewhere.

As I was only interested in replacing rusted headlight relay screws I hadn't previously noted the flat washers on the wiper relay and had assumed they were the same. Oops.
