    carb

Don't get on here very often in the last 45 years. I have a 63 327/340 and would like to replace the crappy carter carb. Any suggestions would be very helpful. member 5054

    Re: carb

If you're not concerned with NCRS Judging the Edelbrock carb is pretty bullet-proof right out of the box. You will not be able to use your correct aircleaner due to slightly larger airhorn diameter on the Edelbrock. Have you also considered having your Carter rebuilt by a reputable vendor? Many on here have their favorites so you can review their recommendations when they post them.

I'd have the AFB rebuilt and not even think about replacing it. My '63 327/300 has pretty much the same carburetor and it's a jewel.

        Re: carb

I've had nothing but trouble with eldebrock carbs on some of our street rods(we called them street rods when I was still suckin hind teat). anyway, the AFB's are my favorites, the WCFB's 2nd, Holleys 3rd and quadrates forth. of course, nothing beats a 57-65 Rochester. mike

I wouldn't call a Carter Carb crappy. It's one of the easiest to maintain & adjust. Find yourself a good rebuilder and you will be happy with it for another 50 years.

            Re: carb

The AFB is a very reliable carb. It doesn't have "wet" gaskets like Holleys, so you'll never have fuel bowl gasket leaks.

The biggest problem is the hot air choke system that gets dirty and clogged up, resulting in poor cold starting because the choke won't set. This is usually easy to fix by cleaning the choke vacuum break piston and bore. You don't even have to remove the carb, just the choke housing, but remember there is a small O-ring that seals a small vacuum passage that continuously draws air from the air cleaner through the heat stove in the manifold to the themostatic spring.

The heat stove tube inside the exhaust manifold can rust through, allowing exhaust gas into the choke housing that will quickly freeze up the vacuum break piston.

Use a quality paper filter element like a NAPA 2070. Only use an oil wetted foam element for judging

45 year old carburetors like 45 year old people can develop problems that require some help. The carb is easy to overhaul, but if you're not comfortable doing it yourself there are several pros who can do everything from a simple "zip kit" overhaul to a full mechanical and cosmetic restoration to look and perform as new.

Bob has done two AFB's and two WCFB's for me - all have been perfect. He runs the carbs on a test engine before shipping so you can be assured it's a bolt on and go.
