If there is a chance you'll be driving I-22 on your way to the National Convention...

Be careful as you drive this 1.5 mile stretch of I-22 just north of Birmingham:

Using unmarked police cars and uniforms without insignia, the town with no traffic lights collected $487 in fines and forfeitures in 2020 for every man, woman and child. Total town income more than doubled from 2018 to 2020 – from $582,000 to more than $1.2 million – as fines and forfeitures rose 640%.

Sounds like one of those towns you only saw in Burt Reynolds/Hal Needham movies from the '70s.

Sounds like something that happened to me back in 1971 while driving through Louisiana on my way to an assignment at Keesler AFB in Mississippi. I was stopped by a local sheriff when he said I "Ran his stop sign". I disagreed, but he offered to take me to jail to await a hearing or pay a fine. Since I was due to report for duty in two days I opted to visit the judge along with the sheriff. When we arrived at the court house, the judge offered me a $50 fine or 30 days in jail. I opted for the $50. On my return trip through the state, I gave that little town a wide berth.

Not in uniform, but told the sheriff that I was on my way to military training. Caught no joy from him. My Pennsylvania license plates probably did not help. He knew he had the fine because I had to be on time to the assignment.

Don't count on that Dave. Corruption is a very contagious disease, and it is all too easy to become addicted to the income it produces.

Terry, I read about this situation in an internet news feed. Seems to be a dependency as much as an addiction. If the figures presented are true, I don't see how the little town will survive without it.
