TCS system testing and test procedures?

Working on a TCS system and have been studying the GM service manual, the AIM, the TIMJG etc trying to do diagnosis and repairs. My first go to when I'm into new territory is the "Database of Restoration Documents" in this forum. But I do not see anything listed for the TCS system on C3's. I did a forum search and found some different threads, but wanted to know if anyone had done a write up test procedure and trouble shooting?

If someone has already done this, please let me know and I will save the time for another project!

How does your mock-up create a transmission gear signal? I thought TCS only worked in certain gears.

Hi Brad, each year(70-72) is just slightly different and engine displacement and transmission type ( auto/4spd.). What are you working with?

All - I have diagnosed and solved my original problem but this research has led me to want to help others with more research and creating a school/presentation on the TCS & CEC systems. I have been scouring ebay for used parts and I am reaching out to any NCRS members that may have old parts that they removed or are not going to use anymore that would be willing to part with.

Please contact me with any old TCS/CEC items you have. thank you!

Re: TCS system testing and test procedures?

I haven't taken a Corvette with M40 through an ops check, but from my days as 1970-72 National Team Leader I can tell you the answer. Is that sufficient experience?

To check the operation of TCS & CEC on 1970 to 72 Corvettes with M40 the owner, with engine at normal operating temperature at idle speed and brake firmly applied, is to place the transmission selector in Reverse. The rear of the car should noticeably raise up, and engine speed should attempt to increase.

I believe the operation is the same for other year C3 Corvettes equipped with TCS.

One needs to be cognizant of the ambient temperature. Both TCS & CEC will not function above about 85* F.

Edit add: There is a brief description of the above in the Operations section of the 1970-72 TIM&JG.

Yes engine temperature is a factor, as is that time delay on some year power trains, which is why I indicated to start with engine at operating temperature and normal idle. I tried to eliminate as many of the fine details as I could. The finer details are in the 1970-72 TIM&JG. I also wanted to give an answer that pertained to an Operations check and differentiate that from a PV check.

The line between Operations check and PV check is problematic and could be cause for another of my rants -- none of us want or need that.

Thanks for the invitation Dave, but I have learned my rants only help me, and to do so publicly is not productive. Besides, it would be off topic here. I don't know how long a thread that was titled "Terry's rants" would last either, but that might be fun to do. For S & G as they say.

I believe member Eric Meyer wrote up the best article on this subject. It was published, my memory fails me to which Restorer edition however.....

They say "There is nothing new under the sun" and that applies to Corvette repair and technical articles. Thanks to advice in this thread, I was able to locate Erich Meyer's article on 1972 TCS systems in the Vol 40, #3, Winter 2014 Corvette Restorer. I was planning to write an article on diagnosis and repair of the 1972 TCS system, but I realize I could never do as good of a job as Erich did! My system is now functioning perfectly and one step closer to PV.

Thank you to all that responded
