Paint coverage on 1966 L79 timing chain cover

What have others seen in terms of original paint coverage on C2 small block timing chain covers?

There is grease or rust under the paint on the Timing chain cover AND if the paint was that heavy from the factory there should be no rust.

I believe someone sprayed the cover when the pump was replaced.

When I have pulled original water pumps most of the time there is a barely detectable paint mist with surface rust on the TC cover.

I'm not surprised someone painted behind the pump. I paint the front of the engine and back of the water pump when I need to remove it.

I'll agree - you have extra paint runs, and paint over dirt.
My car had the same thing done when the water pump was replaced.

Thanks all. Everything you say makes sense.

My next posting tonight will be to list all the items that I think get engine orange. With the hope that those of you with far more knowledge than me will make corrections where needed. Stay tuned.

Also, The lower rear portion received minimal coverage and the upper rear portion also received minimal paint coverage and it was not uncommon for bare metal to show through the thin paint coverage.

It's possible that the chain and sprocket have been changed and the cover was repainted at that time.

                  Mike,

I know the timing chain was never replaced from talking with all previous owners about what was done to the car. So, almost certainly the timing chain cover was partially painted when the water pump was replaced.

IIRC this what John Hinckley once told me about engine painting at Flint; "A hood was dropped over the intake area and the worker painted an engine in 10 to 12 seconds".

                      Gary,

I think that description by John is in the archives that I read the past day or two.
