    1960 Spare Tire Cover

After reading the article in the current Restorer, I reviewed the Judging Guide and it states that the board used for cars with 5.5" wheels had a board that was altered. I believe the board in my 1960 trunk is original, but I am not the first owner (since 1989). Part of the bottom of the board is cut off and the cutout for lifting was enlarged. Can someone post a photo of a board that was altered to accommodate a wide wheel?

A side note, I noticed that the front side of the center ring was cad plated and the back side looks like dichromate. Is that possible?

I agree Mark. The yellow may be caused by application of adhesive for the adjoining pieces of foam, but typically the adhesive turns yellowish-brown with age and exposure to sun. The underside of the board did not get exposed to sun though.

Joe if you remove it the underside will tell what it was originally. Many C1 parts were dichromate. E.g. decklid latch parts, TR bolts on exhaust brackets, etc. Many times I've been surprised when disassembling C1s. Dichromate is sacrificial. In a short time it disappears unless covered.

Here is the decklid hardware from my '59. Note dichromate after I took it apart.

Here is another '59. Door post w/strip clips. Backside dichromate.

Don't overlook the fact that there is silver cad and yellow cad. I learned that back in 1989 when I first took parts in to be cad plated. The plater asked me if I wanted silver or yellow. I said, "Huh?"
