    1.1/2" hole in trans tunnel.

We are restoring a 1968 /435hp bought as a frame,a body and all the rest. The car has been in the UK since the early 70's and has had many bumps along the way.We are repairing fibreglass at the moment, footwells etc. The gentleman I bought from had it changed from 4 speed to auto because of his physical state,he walks with a stick. We are putting it back to 4 speed.
In front of the shifter area there is a 1.1/2" hole in the top of the tunnel.Do all bodies have this hole from the factory,it has not been hand cut,it looks factory . If so did it have a rubber/plastic bung inserted when a 4 speed car,it does not have any screw or rivet holes around it for a plate for an auto cable.

    Thank you,
    John Mayes 35080.

John, here is a picture of one of my 68s. No hole in the fiberglass on a 1968 4 speed L71 June 68 build.

Good evening Drew,Do you remember me a few years back

              Good Evening Drew,
Do you remember me from a few years back when I had added my 65 FI 116690 to Jim Gessners 65 Registry only to find that you had spotted my unit and it was already on the Registry.
The 68 I am doing is completely stripped down to a bare shell because it has so much fibreglass damage. The previous owner due to his disability had the transmission changed to auto,we are changing back to 4 speed. On the top of the tunnel about 6" forward of the shifter is the 1.1/2" hole.
On an auto car this would be where the transmission cable would go through a circular plate with 3 screws to hold it to the f/glass. However the car was originally a 4 speed. The hole is there but no sign of where any hold down screws were used when they modified it .I assume they just stuffed the cable through the hole and that was that.
So my question is about the hole that is completely round ,not hand cut, looks factory to me. Did all bodies have this hole and any auto coming down the line have the attaching screws drilled then. If this is the case was there anything inserted in the hole on a 4 speed car to stop ingress of water and muck, surely it was not left open.
I am sorry I have had to waffle on about such a simple problem. If I can't find the answer I will glass it over, but I would rather do what GM did.

Thank you Brad, I will look for a rubber plug over here to block it off.
