In case anyone else out there wondered (as I did) about the differences between flash chroming and hard chroming, these links look like they explain it pretty well...

Flash chrome plating applies a thin layer of chrome and is suitable for applications needing light wear & corrosion protection. Learn more.

Quality, reliable industrial hard chrome plating specialists. We can hold tight tolerances when depositing chromium plating on all metal surfaces, including aluminum and titanium and other metal substrates.
      thx,

For what it's worth, I received a 2 point deduct for the chrome on a reproduction air cleaner on a 66 at a regional meet.

So I assume the flash chroming was less expensive and that is why the general used it.

Also a show chrome lid has quite a bit more heft to it than a flash chromed original...
